Sunday 2nd April - It's Census day ....

The 1871 census shows that the Bingham family - Edward (62), his wife Emma (56), daughter Emma Mary (34) and son Charles H (22) - are staying at a hotel located at 6 Eversfield Place, St. Mary Magdalen, Hastings. Only a single member of the domestic staff is presence on the night - Thomas Wood (39), the coachman.

  • No. 7 Broomgrove Road (Holme Bank) is the home of William Law (tobacco manufacturer), his wife Harriett and their son Arthur (also a tobacco manufacturer).There is also two domestic servants living with them.

  • No. 9 Broomgrove Road is still the home of the Frith family - Peter (still an optician), wife Frances and daughter Fanny B, along with two domestic servants.

  • No. 11 Broomgrove Road (Broomgrove House) is also continuing to be the home of Samuel Parker (now retired) and his sister - Jane Casson. Two domestic staff are also resident.

  • No. 23 Broomgrove Road is the Roberts family home. John B, a ????? broker and estate agent along with his solicitor son - also called John B. Both are looked after by two domestic servants.

  • No. 25 Broomgrove Road is occupied by the family of John Blatherwick (sugar broker) and his wife Maud. Daughters Florence, Blanche and Kate and son Harold N are looked after by three domestic servants.

  • No. 27 Broomgrove Road is home to the family of William Bennett - a plumber - his wife Sarah, sons James F and Lawrence C as well as daughters Maud L, Emily D and Sarah A. There is a visitor as well - Mary A Hendington as well as two domestic servants.

  • No. 29 Broomgrove Road is home to the Chesterman family - William (measuring tape manufacturer), Emma (his wife) and Harriett (his mother) plus two domestics servants.

Kelly's Sheffield Court Directory, as published in the 1879 publication of Kelly's Directory of Leeds, Sheffield and Rotherham listed the following:
